It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story film was released, establishing Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
